The first day is very important, so choose carefully your activities.
I always play a game with a small ball. First, students form a circle then they throw the ball to each other saying their names and asking their colleagues' names. they go on playing changing the theme. Students have lots of fun and at the same time they remember some of the vocabulary learned the previous year.
"Simon Says" is also a funny game for the 1st day.

Behaviour chart

Behaviour charts are often used in classroom. They help children become more aware of their behavior.
The most common are the coloured dots charts (green for good behaviour, red for bad behaviour). But you can put your imagination to work and create different funny charts.
Behavior charts for young children can be as simple as happy and sad faces( smileys).
The worm chart is easy to make and students like it a lot.
You start by cutting out several colored circles. Draw a face on a circle to start the worm, and write the child’s name on the back of it. Children with good behavior will earn a circle for each day. The circles can be attached together to ultimately make a worm. Children who build a worm with six circles earn a reward at the end of the week.
A friend of mine gave me an interesting idea: making a race out of the chart. drawing little cars and moving them forward each day for students with good behaviour , the first Student to finish the race earns a reward.

This is students' favourite unit. Students usually learn jungle and farm animals as well as pets. This year I introduced insects and they loved it. So next year I'll teach them new animals: ocean animals. I think they're going to like it too. If you search in "Learningpage", you'll find nice murals for this unit. "Britishcouncil" also has nice flashcards and worksheets.
The chinese Zodiac uses animals , surfing the net, I've found nice things that can be used in the classroom. For example: the story of the Chinese zodiac, the zodiac wheel. Kids will have great fun revising animal names and finding out which animal represents their year of birth.

kids enjoy songs very much!
If you want to do something different, use well-known hits and change them or not. You'll be surprised with what your Ss can do!

Games

Children love to play. They are always asking for games, teachers need lots of imagination to present them new games!

- Hangman - great for the alphabet unit

- Treasure hunt - kids love it! suitable for all units

- The envelope game - you need three envelopes (blue, red and green), each envelope has questions or pictures related to the units that you taught, the blue one has got easy questions, the green one has got not so easy questions, thered one has got difficult questions. Each question has got a number. Kids have to throw two dices to know what question they get. For each correct answer, one black point. If someone answers without being its turn, one red point. For each three red points the teacher takes away one black point. The winner is the one with more points at the end of the game.

- Board games - you can create your own; You can find nice ones in mes-english site.

- Tic-tac-toe - the class is devided in two groups (x - 0). On the board you make a grid, each space has got a number. Each number represents a theme and has questions about it. If the answer is correct the group scores an x or an 0.

- Bingo - Everybody likes this game! It's great for practising recognition ( writing and speaking form). Suitable for all units.

- Dominoes game - this is a game suitable for all units. Students can create their ouwn dominoes, on one side a picture , on the other side a word.

- Games with cards - There are many games you can play with cards.You can make your own cards or, better your Students could create their own cards!

- Fortune Teller Game - This is a well-known game by all kids! Great for numbers, animals and alphabet.
Start with the Fortune Teller closed.
Ask a Student to pick one of the animals then open the fortune teller forward and backwards as you spell out the animal chosen.
Next, ask the student again to pick one of the numbers that is inside and open the fortune teller that many times.
Finally ask him to pick one more number from the numbers inside and open the flap for that number.
Read him his fortune!
- Card Games - All the kids love playing games with cards. You can make your own cards or Students could make them, this way they will enjoy much more the game! THis game is suitable for all units.
